What is an operations diagnostic, and why start there?

Most companies in the UAE already know they should be using more automation and AI. The harder question is where to start. Buying a platform and hoping teams adopt it is expensive and often fails. An operations diagnostic takes a different route: measure first, then build only what pays back.

Why automation projects fail

The most common reason is that the project starts with a tool rather than a problem. A vendor demonstrates something impressive, a licence is bought, and six months later the old spreadsheets are still running alongside it.

The second reason is that nobody measured the starting point. Without knowing how many hours a process takes today, nobody can prove the new system saved anything, and the next project becomes harder to approve.

What an operations diagnostic covers

A diagnostic is a focused review of how one company actually runs. A consultant works alongside your teams to:

  • Map key processes such as order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, finance close, customer service and reporting.
  • Measure volumes and time: how many orders, invoices and enquiries you handle, and how long each takes.
  • Review systems, including your ERP or SAP version, Excel files, email and WhatsApp habits, and how they connect.
  • Check data handling so any AI recommendation fits UAE data protection rules and your IT policies.

The goal is not a thick report. It is a short, ranked list of opportunities backed by real numbers.

How savings are calculated

A good diagnostic uses a simple, conservative formula. For each task: volume × time per task × fully loaded hourly cost gives the current cost. Then assume automation captures 60 to 80 percent of that work, never 100 percent. Subtract the costs of building, licences, training and maintenance, and you get a realistic payback period.

Every opportunity is then plotted on impact against effort. High-impact, low-effort items become quick wins. High-impact, high-effort items become the core of the roadmap.

What you get at the end

  • A ranked list of automation and AI opportunities with estimated savings in AED
  • Two or three quick wins your team can start immediately
  • A phased roadmap with budgets and timelines
  • A clear list of what your IT team needs to approve, such as SAP access

Is it worth paying for?

A diagnostic usually costs a fraction of a single build project, and it protects you from spending on the wrong thing. It also creates the baseline you need to prove results later. For family groups with several companies, a diagnostic on one company becomes the playbook for the rest.
